What is Samos?

Samos is an insurtech startup. We created Accidental Death Insurance for Medical Procedures (ADIM). We are insurance experts, data enthusiasts, researchers, and innovators, creating an accessible platform to educate and provide patients with peace of mind.

What is ADIM?

Accidental Death Insurance for Medical Procedures (ADIM) offers accidental death insurance for your elective surgery, covering the time from admission to discharge.

What are elective surgeries?

Elective surgeries are medical procedures that can be booked in advance. They aren’t emergent, life-threatening, critical, or sudden. For more details, check out our list of covered procedures.

Where is Samos licensed to operate?

We currently operate in Ontario, Canada and are expanding the list of provinces and states in which ADIM is available.

Why do I need ADIM if I have health, group, life or AD&D insurance?

Health/group insurance only covers medical expenses, AD&D typically excludes surgery related death, and life insurance covers most death outcomes but requires monthly premium payments. ADIM provides surgical accidental death coverage whether or not you have existing policies. Compare ADIM to other forms of insurance.

Policy

How much does it cost?

Premiums depend on your age, procedure, and desired insurance benefit amount. Most of our premiums are under $100.

What coverage do you offer?

ADIM plans have coverage for a $100,000 benefit.

Is my procedure covered?

We cover hundreds of elective procedures which account for half of all procedures conducted annually in the US. You can review a more complete list or contact us to find out if your procedure is covered.

What procedures aren’t covered?

We do not cover emergent, life-threatening, critical, or sudden medical procedures, like organ transplants, emergency bypass due to a heart attack, or trauma surgery due to a car accident.

What if my procedure is rescheduled?

If your procedure is delayed, let us know at least 48 hours before your original admission date.
If your procedure is earlier, please inform us at least 48 hours before your new admission date.

Are there any medical requirements?

There is no medical exam, the only medical related question we ask if to identify the procedure you are undergoing.

How soon before surgery do I need to sign up?

You have to have a policy complete at least 48 hours before your surgery. We recommend starting the quote process at least 72 hours before.

Who can apply for coverage?

Currently, we offer insurance coverage to individuals in Ontario, Canada aged 20-69, who are undergoing elective surgery. We’re currently expanding the list of provinces and states in which ADIM is available.

How can I access my policy?

Once you digitally sign the ADIM policy we send you via DocuSign (a secure eSignature platform), a PDF of your policy will be emailed to you and will be available in Docusign for future reference.

How long will a policy cover me?

Your policy covers the time from admission to discharge at the medical facility where your elective surgery takes place.

Do you cover disability or injury due to surgery?

No. Insurance benefits are only paid out upon death of the insured if it occurred between admission and discharge for the insured procedure.

Is there a waiting period?

There is no waiting period for the policy to activate. Once your premium payment is received and the policy is signed, coverage is considered active for the surgical stay period.

What if I don’t know my exact procedure name or date?

We can help you identify your exact procedure name and you can update your admission details once you have more information after you’ve purchased a policy

Does Samos cover me internationally?

No. Samos currently provides coverage in Ontario, Canada.

I’m visiting from outside the country,
can I purchase a policy?

We currently only offer ADIM to Ontario residents.

How do I update or cancel my policy?

Email support@samos.insure to make any changes or cancel your existing policy.

Can I extend my policy?

No. Coverage is only in effect between admission and discharge for the specific elective surgery listed on the policy. If you wish to have subsequent procedures covered, those procedures would require new policies. If your procedure is being rescheduled, please see our rescheduling FAQ question above.

Is there a deductible?

No. ADIM does not have a deductible.

Claims

How do I file a claim?

Email claims@samos.insure with the Insured’s details (name, surgery name and date, policy number if available). We’ll provide you with a list of required documents and guide you through the claims process from there.

How much time do I have to file a claim?

Beneficiaries or appointed individuals will need to provide various medical records within 30 days after the accidental death for review, processing, and benefits payout. More details are outlined in our Claims section.

How long does it take for a claim to be paid?

Claims will be paid out as soon as they are approved.
